Biggest catches
- Family rule: one Blue Cash Preferred bonus per lifetime. Amex may refuse the bonus if you have or have had this card, the Morgan Stanley Blue Cash Preferred, or an earlier version. Unlike the Everyday, holding a Blue Cash Everyday doesn't block it. doctorofcredit.com (third-party)
- Amex can decline the bonus at application (the pop-up). Beyond the family rule, Amex weighs your Amex history and how many cards you've opened and closed, and can tell you the Blue Cash Preferred bonus isn't available. It shows that notice before processing, so you can withdraw instead of opening a card with no bonus. americanexpress.com
- Costco, Walmart and Target aren't 'supermarkets'. The 6% grocery rate only codes at U.S. supermarkets. Superstores, warehouse clubs and discount stores earn 1%. onemileatatime.com (third-party)
- 6% groceries stops at $6,000 a year. Supermarket spend past $6,000 a year drops to 1%, so a big household tops it out at $360 of grocery cash back a year. americanexpress.com
- 2.7% foreign transaction fee. The card charges a foreign transaction fee, so it's a poor card to use abroad. onemileatatime.com (third-party)
- Gift cards and cash equivalents don't count toward the spend. Amex's standard welcome-offer terms exclude gift cards, prepaid card loads and other cash equivalents (plus fees and interest) from eligible purchases. Doctor of Credit quotes this Amex wording; we didn't re-read this card's own terms text for it. doctorofcredit.com (third-party)
- Clawback if you cancel or downgrade inside 12 months. Amex's welcome-offer terms let it take the bonus back if you cancel or downgrade within 12 months of opening, return the purchases you used, or game the offer. The Points Guy quotes this wording. thepointsguy.com (third-party)
- Amex approval velocity. Community data says Amex approves at most one credit card per rolling 5 days and two per rolling 90 days. Space this application from your other Amex credit cards. doctorofcredit.com (third-party)

YMMV: approval and bonus eligibility are the issuer's decision.
Sensei's move
Get the Blue Cash Everyday bonus first
The Everyday's terms block its bonus if you have or had the Preferred, but the Preferred's terms only name itself and the Morgan Stanley version. Open the Everyday first, then the Preferred later, and you can collect both bonuses. Do it the other way round and the Everyday bonus is gone. The owner's Oct 17 2026 hand check still shows this one-way wording.

Downgrade to the Everyday after a year
The first year is $0, so you can test whether 6% groceries and streaming beats the $95 fee. If it doesn't, product change to the no-fee Blue Cash Everyday after at least 12 months so the bonus isn't at risk. A product change doesn't earn an Everyday bonus, so do it only if you've already had the Everyday or don't plan to.

Sensei's take
$300 for $3,000 of spend with a $0 first year is a clean, fair churn, and it's once per lifetime, so apply after you've taken the Everyday bonus. After year one, the $120 Disney credit alone covers the $95 fee if you already pay for Disney streaming, and 6% on real supermarket spend is extra; if you don't, downgrade to the Everyday. Cash back is cash: one Reward Dollar is worth $1, no more and no less. With a 2.7% foreign fee and no travel perks, it has no place in a travel wallet.
