Biggest catches
- Any higher Delta card, or the Options card, blocks this bonus. Per the owner's hand check of the terms, you may not get the Blue bonus if you have or had the Blue, Delta SkyMiles Options, Gold, Platinum or Reserve, or earlier versions. People who start with a Gold or Platinum can't go back for it. americanexpress.com
- Amex can decline the bonus at application (the pop-up). Beyond the family rule, Amex weighs your Amex history and how many cards you've opened and closed, and can tell you the Delta Blue bonus isn't available. It shows that notice before processing, so you can withdraw instead of opening a card with no bonus. americanexpress.com
- Gift cards and cash equivalents don't count toward the spend. Amex's standard welcome-offer terms exclude gift cards, prepaid card loads and other cash equivalents (plus fees and interest) from eligible purchases. Doctor of Credit quotes this Amex wording; we didn't re-read this card's own terms text for it. doctorofcredit.com (third-party)
- Amex approval velocity. Community data says Amex approves at most one credit card per rolling 5 days and two per rolling 90 days. Space this application from your other Amex credit cards. doctorofcredit.com (third-party)
- Amex credit-card count cap. Amex is reported to cap you at about five open Amex credit cards (charge cards don't count). A long-term keeper uses up one of those slots. doctorofcredit.com (third-party)

YMMV: approval and bonus eligibility are the issuer's decision.
Sensei's move
Climb the Delta ladder from the bottom
Delta family rules only look upward: Gold is blocked by Gold, Platinum or Reserve; Platinum by Platinum or Reserve; Reserve only by itself. Start with the Blue, then Gold, Platinum and Reserve, and each bonus stays available. Mind the Amex 1-in-5 / 2-in-90 approval limits between them.

Use the card to unlock Pay with Miles at 1 cent
Holding a Delta Amex card lets you use Pay with Miles at a fixed one cent per mile toward Delta fares, which sets a floor for the bonus. 10,000 miles is $100 that way. Award bookings with the 15% TakeOff discount can do better.

Sensei's take
10,000 miles is about $100 at Delta's own one-cent Pay with Miles rate (One Mile at a Time values them at 1.1 cents), so it's a weak churn on its own. Its real use is as the first rung of the Delta ladder, since any higher Delta card blocks it later. With no annual fee it costs nothing to keep for the TakeOff 15 award discount and no foreign transaction fees. For travel it's a maybe: useful for Delta award bookers, thin otherwise.
