Biggest catches
- Chase 5/24. Chase generally denies applicants with 5 or more new personal cards from any issuer in the past 24 months. If you're near 5/24, a Sapphire or Ink card may be the better use of the slot. doctorofcredit.com (third-party)
- Bonus miles can be clawed back within six months. If the account isn't open for at least six months, United and Chase can deduct the bonus miles, including the authorized-user bonus. Keep the card open at least six months. creditcards.chase.com
- Cash-like transactions don't count toward the $4,000. Money orders, traveler's checks, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, person-to-person transfers and fees aren't purchases. Only real purchases count toward the bonus. creditcards.chase.com
- Rideshare credit needs yearly enrollment. The rideshare credit only posts if you opt in, and you must opt in again every year. creditcards.chase.com
- Free bags require buying the ticket with the card. Free first and second checked bags for you and one companion apply only when the ticket is bought with the Quest, except during the first 90 days after opening. Codeshare flights are excluded. creditcards.chase.com
- Bonus posts 6 to 8 weeks after the spend. The 80,000 bonus miles can take 6 to 8 weeks to reach MileagePlus after you meet the spend. Don't book an award counting on them sooner. creditcards.chase.com

Cardholder-only award discounts and earning
Since April 2, 2026 United gives cardholders at least 10% off United award flights (15% with Premier status) and more miles per dollar on flights than non-cardholders; members with neither status nor a card earn nothing on basic economy. Holding the Quest is now the cheapest way into those cardholder rates if you also use the credits.

Top up with Chase Ultimate Rewards
Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer 1:1 to United, so a Sapphire or Ink card can fill the gap for an award, and the cardholder discount and expanded saver availability apply when you book. FM notes United removed the Excursionist perk, so multi-city awards no longer get a free segment.

Rebook the bonus every 24 months
The bonus rule is per card and 24 months: you can't hold the Quest now or have earned its bonus in the past 24 months. Cancel or downgrade, wait out the 24 months from the last bonus, and reapply if you're under 5/24.

Sensei's take
80,000 miles for $4,000 is solid, and a 24-month per-card rule means you can come back for it, but it costs a 5/24 slot. The $200 TravelBank cash plus Instacart and rideshare credits roughly cover the $350 fee for a United flyer who uses all of them; the hotel, JSX and Avis credits are too narrow to count on. Keep it past year one only if you fly United enough to use the TravelBank cash and want the cardholder award discount and free bags. Otherwise take the bonus, use the credits for a year, and cancel after month six.
