Biggest catches
- 5% needs activation every quarter. The rotating 5% only applies up to the quarterly maximum once you activate that quarter's categories. Skip activation and those purchases earn 1%, and the match only doubles the 1%. discover.com
- Some rewards aren't matched. Statement credits and rewards transferred from Discover or Capital One deposit accounts are left out of Cashback Match. Rewards on a closed account aren't matched either. discover.com
- Close it before year-end and you lose the match. The match only pays if the account is open and in good standing when the first year ends, and it posts within two billing periods after that. Don't cancel or product change until it has posted. discover.com
YMMV: approval and bonus eligibility are the issuer's decision.
Sensei's move
Load the first year with 5% categories
Cashback Match doubles every dollar of cash back from the first year with no cap, so activated 5% quarters work out to 10%, on up to $1,500 of spend per quarter by Frequent Miler's count. Activate all four quarters and steer category spend here during year one. Capital One confirmed in May 2026 that both the rotating categories and the match continue.

Sensei's take
The bonus depends entirely on your spend, so it's only as good as how much you put through in year one. Run your 5% quarters through it and the match makes it a 10% card on those categories. With no annual fee, keep it long term for the rotating 5%. It earns cash back, not travel points, so it doesn't belong in a travel wallet.
