Biggest catches
- No pick, no 5%. You have to choose your two 5% categories and one 2% category every quarter. If you don't, everything earns 1%. usbank.com
- The 5% cap is shared across both categories. 5% applies to the first $2,000 of net purchases each quarter across both chosen categories combined, not $2,000 each. Spend above that earns 1%. usbank.com
- Any past Cash Rewards account blocks the bonus. Existing and previous U.S. Bank Cash Rewards accounts don't qualify for the one-time bonus. If you've had a U.S. Bank cash card, check before applying. usbank.com
- Prepaid cards and cash convertibles don't count. Loading certain prepaid cards, buying U.S. Mint currency and other cash-convertible items aren't purchases. They earn no rewards and won't help with the bonus. usbank.com
- Cash back expires after 36 months. Rewards expire at the end of the calendar month 36 months after the billing cycle in which you earned them. Redeem regularly. usbank.com
YMMV: approval and bonus eligibility are the issuer's decision.
Sensei's move
Put your bills on 5%
Pick home utilities and cell phone (or TV, internet and streaming) as your two 5% categories. Recurring bills fill the $2,000 combined quarterly cap without changing how you shop, and few other cards pay 5% on utilities.

Sensei's take
The cash bonus is modest and blocked by any past Cash Rewards account, so it's a weak churn. The value is long term: 5% on bills like utilities and your phone, up to $2,000 a quarter, for no annual fee, as long as you remember to pick categories every quarter. It's a cash-back card, not a travel card.
