What it means for churners

  • The three-year hold is long; compare against one-year-hold offers before moving large balances.

Fine print

  • Holding period is three years from the reward date. Withdrawals or moves to non-eligible accounts can trigger an Early Removal Fee, capped at the reward received.
  • Joint and trust accounts, self-directed investing accounts, Cash Reserve and 401(k) accounts are excluded.
  • Eligible: new clients, clients with a $0 balance in all managed investing accounts on May 1, 2026, or clients without a managed investing retail account. Not for Betterment Advisor Solutions clients.
  • The reward goes into IRAs first (Roth, then traditional, then SEP), then taxable accounts, and is reported as interest. The terms don't call it cash.
  • Not valid with other investing offers. US residents only.
  • Betterment's managed accounts charge an advisory fee; the terms page doesn't state the amount.
