Affected cards
These include, but aren't limited to:
What it means for churners
- Opening one now? The first year is still free, so the bonus math is the same. Your first renewal will bill $150, so decide before then.
- Keeping one? The $100 inflight credit replaces the 25% discount. It makes up for the $51 increase only if you spend about $70 to $200 a year on food, drinks or Wi-Fi on American flights. Spend more and you fall behind again: the credit stops at $100, but the 25% discount kept growing.
- Platinum Select holders who'd use Walmart+ (worth $98 a year, The Points Guy) get more back than the increase.
Fine print
- Citi and American Airlines announced the changes; The Points Guy (Oct 27) and US Credit Card Guide (Oct 28) report them. Both cards' pages still show the $99 fee (checked Oct 28), and American Airlines' news page wouldn't load for us.
- The inflight credit doesn't cover Admirals ClubA private airport space with seating, food and drinks. Delta Sky Club, American's Admirals Club, United Club and Amex's Centurion are lounge brands. Glossary purchases. Walmart+ needs enrollment (US Credit Card Guide).
- Miles are not cash; their value depends on how you redeem them.
