Fee-charging sites only

How to get it

  1. National parks: the entrance fee is waived at parks that charge one. Check the park on nps.gov for timed tickets or reservations, which may still cost money.
  2. National forests and grasslands: fees are waived at most sites for day visits, like picnic areas, trailheads and visitor centers. Privately run sites may still charge, so check the forest's own page.
  3. Bureau of Land Management lands: day-visit fees are waived at participating sites. The list can change, so check BLM's fee-free days page or call the local office.

Fine print

  • Overnight camping, cabins, group use and special permits still cost the usual price on BLM land. Park and forest pages say other fees may apply.
  • Nonresidents pay the regular fees at national parks and on BLM land. The Forest Service page doesn't say its free day is limited to U.S. residents.
  • Many BLM places are free every day.
