How to get it · 3 steps

  1. If you don't have one yet, open the account first: an Amex High Yield Savings account for a Blue Cash card, or Amex Business Checking for Graphite.
  2. Sign in at americanexpress.com, pick your cash back card, go to Reward Dollars and choose the deposit. If your card and bank account use different logins, call the number on the back of your card. Amex says the app option is coming soon.
  3. Enter any amount; there's no minimum. Amex takes the Reward Dollars right away, and the money usually arrives within 4 business days, though it can take up to 6 weeks.

What changed

  • BeforeReward Dollars went to a statement credit or Amazon.com checkout
NowThey can also be deposited, $1 for $1, into Amex High Yield Savings (Blue Cash cards) or Amex Business Checking (Graphite)

Affected cards

These include, but aren't limited to:

What it means for churners

  • If you have a Blue Cash card and Amex savings, your cash back can now sit in savings and earn interest. Each Reward Dollar is still worth $1, the same as a statement creditMoney taken off your card bill, usually after a qualifying purchase. It lowers what you owe; it isn't a cash payout. Glossary.
  • Closing a Blue Cash or Graphite card? Move your Reward Dollars out first: Amex says you lose the whole balance if the card is canceled, and a deposit is a clean way to cash out.
  • Graphite cardholders with Amex Business Checking can now put cash back straight into the business account, $1 for $1.

Fine print

  • Only the main cardholder (Amex's Basic Card Member) can redeem. For savings, they must be the account's first or second owner.
  • For Business Checking, the cardholder must be the account's primary admin or owner. Admin users and view-only users can't redeem into it.
  • The card can't be canceled or past due, and the bank account must be open and not restricted. A finished deposit is final and can't be reversed.
  • Online redemption works only when the card and the bank account share one American Express login; otherwise, call the number on the back of your card.
  • Amex says the savings account's interest rate (APYAnnual percentage yield: the interest a savings account pays over a year, counting interest on interest. Glossary) can change at any time.
