How to get it

  1. Sign in to Rakuten, a free cash back site, or join first. Open Rakuten's SoFi Banking page and click through to SoFi, with browser cookies on (Rakuten's terms ask for that).
  2. Open your first SoFi Checking and Savings account through that link.
  3. Set up direct deposit of your paycheck. The first one must be $500 or more and post within 45 days of your click. Rakuten then adds the $225 to your Rakuten account, which can take several weeks or longer, and pays out by PayPal or check.

What it means for churners

  • SoFi's own direct deposit bonus, up to $400, stacks on top of Rakuten's $225. SoFi's offer ends Dec 31. It's on our page "SoFi Checking and Savings: up to $400 direct deposit bonus" under Banking.

Fine print

  • One per Rakuten account. You must be 18 or older with an SSN or ITIN.
  • Rakuten pays the amount shown on the day you click its link. It can change the amount at any time and states no end date.
  • Only regular income paid by direct deposit counts: pay from an employer, a pension, or government benefits such as Social Security. Checks, Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Wise, merchant payouts, transfers from other bank accounts, wires and IRS refunds don't.
